This book is loaded with a lot of historical background on Calvinism. While the author is clearly a non-Calvinist, this book is a welcomed addition to those interested in studying Calvinism (regardless of whether you are a Calvinist or not! ^_^).

IF you are looking for a quick intro to the subject, don't get this book. This book is EXHAUSTIVE, covering every relevant nuance and detail of both the history of the conflict as well as the Biblical angle. This is for the serious student of truth who wants not only the Biblical perspective, not only an historical perspective, but also a THOROUGH refutation of each argument a Calvinist might use by also using the very words of Calvinists, themselves!
If I had to pick my favorite thing about this book, is that no one can accuse Vance of misrepresenting Calvinism (a favorite accusation by Calvinists in debate), as he relies PRIMARILY on the words of prominent Calvinists to make his points. I cannot recommend this book enough. Once you finish this EXPERIENCE, you will be an expert on the subject.

Even if Calvinists do not believe that Vance squarely places the TULIP in the anti-biblical man made horrible decree that it is, he can read many authors who taken as a whole, provide a plenary and plethora of polemics refuting that hellish doctrine.(Olson, Fisk, Zeller, Olson, Hunt, Geisler, Lightner, Penfold, Rice, Cloud, Hyles, Hutson, Baker etc.)
But the point is no matter what is written and no matter how many salient arguments are made, he, like most Calvinists will stop their ears and turn (Acts 7) and force the truth out of their minds by calling it straw men arguments, eisegesis, non-exegetical and "heresy" (if all else fails).
No one can or will change their mind when they are down the rabbit hole of Calvinism; and neither Alice's looking glass nor sound biblical refutation of their system will change their mind until they are first willing to put aside their pride and say "what saith the scriptures" and "what if I am wrong".

I have pretty close to every book on this subject.
And this work by Dr. Vance tops them all.
It is sweet reading!!
I've known for years how Plato's doctrine of divine immutability was embraced into the church and the theological repercussions of it.
But I also know from personal experience that to catch a calvi in his labyrinth of 5-point-gesis is like catching a greased pig.
In MHO Dr. Vance catches the pig good!
If you've looked over the myriad of spider-web arguments used to twist scripture into this man-made, man-glorifying theology which morphs the character of God and satan together, you'll love this book.

This book is a must for any student of Scripture whose theological leanings do not include the tenets of Calvinism. In an exhaustive fashion, Vance's 788 page Magnum Opus, "The Other Side of Calvinism" not only demonstrates Calvinism's flaws from a scriptural standpoint but also uses Calvinistic primary sources and refutes those philosophically-based arguments.
